Freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-Queens & Bronx) has been named a member of the House Financial Services Committee, which may have up to 60 members. She stated: “I am very grateful for the opportunity to sit on this committee as a freshman, and look forward to working under the leadership of Rep. Maxine Waters. Personally, I’m looking forward to digging into the student loan crisis, examining for-profit prisons/ICE detention, and exploring the development of public & postal banking. To start.”
She has also been outspoken in favor of reviving the Glass-Steagall Act, and has called for the biggest banks to be broken up. Ocasio-Cortez will likely be joined on the Committee by a group of other very progressive freshmen Representatives including Katie Porter (D-CA), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and Ayanna Pressley (D-MA).
